MBT – Health Testing

The Miniature Bull Terrier is a spirited, intelligent, and robust breed. At Riisestaff, we prioritize health, soundness, and temperament in every breeding decision.

While the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) does not mandate specific health tests, breed experts and the Western Canada Miniature & Bull Terrier Club recommend several screenings to ensure puppies are healthy and free from hereditary conditions.

Recommended Health Tests

BAER Hearing Test

  • Evaluates hearing in puppies and adult dogs to detect congenital deafness, which is more common in predominantly white Miniature Bull Terriers.
  • At Riisestaff, all puppies are BAER tested before they go to their new homes.

Ophthalmologist Eye Examination

Screens for Primary Lens Luxation (PLL) and other hereditary eye conditions that can affect vision.

Cardiac Exam (Echocardiogram with Doppler)

Detects congenital heart defects and helps ensure normal heart function in breeding dogs.

Urine Protein:Creatinine Ratio (UP:UC)

Monitors kidney health and detects potential hereditary kidney disease.

DNA Testing for Breed-Specific Genetic Conditions

Primary Lens Luxation (PLL) – can lead to sudden blindness if untreated.

Lethal Acrodermatitis (LAD) – a rare but serious skin and immune disorder.

Laryngeal Paralysis (LP) – affects breathing and can lead to serious respiratory problems.

At Riisestaff, we perform DNA testing for puppies if one parent is a carrier to ensure responsible breeding decisions.

Our Commitment

At Riisestaff, every Miniature Bull Terrier breeding dog is tested according to breed club recommendations(with some rare exceptions). Our goal is to produce puppies that are healthy, sound, and true to breed standards.

We believe transparency builds trust, and healthy, happy puppies begin with responsible breeding practices. We are happy to share health documentation for all our breeding dogs.
