SBT Health Testing

Health Testing

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is known for its strength and resilience, but like all breeds, it can be prone to a few inherited health conditions. At Riisestaff, we believe that responsible breeding starts with education, transparency, and health testing.

While the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) does not require specific health testing, both the CKC and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club of Canada (SBTCC) recommend several important screenings. These tests help breeders make informed decisions, reduce the risk of inherited problems, and promote the long-term health of the breed.

Recommended Health Tests

Below are the most common CKC and SBTCC recommended tests for Staffordshire Bull Terriers — along with what each test checks for and why it matters.

PENNHIP or OFA Hip Evaluation

What it is: X-rays that evaluate how well the hip joint fits in the socket.
Why it matters: Helps identify or prevent hip dysplasia, a painful condition that can lead to arthritis and reduced mobility later in life. Breeding dogs with healthy hips helps lower the risk in future generations.

OFA Elbow Evaluation

What it is: Radiographs that assess the structure and development of the elbow joints.
Why it matters: Detects signs of elbow dysplasia, a joint abnormality that can cause stiffness or lameness.

You can look up dogs with their registration number at OFA.org

L-2 Hydroxyglutaric Aciduria (L-2-HGA)

What it is: A DNA test unique to the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
Why it matters: L-2-HGA is a metabolic disorder that affects the brain and nervous system. Affected dogs may experience seizures or coordination issues. DNA testing ensures that only clear or carrier dogs are bred responsibly to prevent affected puppies.

Hereditary Cataracts (HC)

What it is: A DNA test for a gene mutation linked to cataracts.
Why it matters: Prevents juvenile cataracts, which can impair vision or cause blindness. By testing breeding dogs, breeders can ensure that puppies won’t inherit this condition.

OFA Eye Examination

What it is: A detailed eye exam by a certified veterinary ophthalmologist.
Why it matters: Detects a range of eye conditions, including early cataract formation or retinal problems, before they affect vision.

Degenerative Myelopathy (DM)

What it is: A DNA test for a neurological condition that affects the spinal cord.
Why it matters: While uncommon in Staffords, DM can lead to progressive hind-limb weakness and paralysis. Testing helps breeders avoid producing at-risk dogs.

Additional Recommended Screening

Though not required, these tests provide extra peace of mind and valuable insight into overall health:

Patella Evaluation

Checks the kneecaps for luxating patellas (loose or slipping kneecaps), which can cause pain or lameness.

Basic Cardiac Exam

A veterinarian listens to the heart for murmurs or irregularities and can detect congenital heart conditions before breeding.

Our Commitment

At Riisestaff, we take pride in following the health testing recommendations set by the CKC and SBTCC. Every breeding dog we own is tested to ensure we are producing healthy, sound, and well-balanced Staffordshire Bull Terriers.

We share our health results openly because we believe that transparency builds trust — and that’s the foundation of every great breeder-owner relationship.
